Our popular program, Spatial Learning as Play (SLAP), has transitioned to include both spatial AND inquiry-focused play-based activities this year. In addition to a weekly activity, children have the choice to participate in a weekly data collection activity by playing a game designed to help us understand the way children think about the world. So far the program has been a hit - hope to see you and your children there!

Check out a short clip about our program on the local news!

Check out a great article in the Hechinger Report on curiosity research!

Also see a couple articles on the CASTL page, highlighting our work on teacher language, and linking to our recent presentation at the Jean Piaget Society meeting in Amsterdam.

Enjoy the summer!

As the 2017-2018 school year winds down, several of our lab members have been presenting their research. Tessa Boutwell and Karime Cameron both presented posters at the Curry Research Conference, where Tiffany Leones gave a symposium talk. Tessa spoke about our work looking at childhood play experiences and the relation to gendered beliefs about toys as adults, along with spatial skill and STEM interest and efficacy. Karime presented the preliminary results of an experiment from our Curiosity in the Classroom project, showing that our curiosity-promoting intervention appears to have a positive effect on question asking, at least in boys. Tiffany presented some data from our SLAP playgroups at the Discovery museum, discussing our challenge in promoting more representation use during spatial play. All of the students did a fantastic job representing the lab! Additionally, our USOAR student, first-year undergraduate Gracie Tillman, also presented our curiosity-promoting experiment from her own perspective helping to collect the data at the USOAR poster session. Congrats to all of our students on getting our research out there and learning to give professional presentations!

Interested in studying child development with an emphasis on addressing actual educational problems or challenges? Check out our website to see if the UVA Curry School's Applied Developmental Science program is a good fit. Consider applying to work with me if you are interested in children's curiosity and question asking, how education impacts curiosity and how curiosity can support learning, how early play experiences can develop spatial skills, or what factors influence our gendered ideas about spatial play and STEM learning. Tangentially related research interests are welcome! Find more information about applying to our PHD program here. Finally, here's our program flyer for this year.
